eruvin 7

when something is missing, the status changes

if a corpse is missing a vertebra or two, then it is just a pile of old bones.
and
if the back wall of an alley is breached to open space where people have not come together to make an eruv, can no longer carry.

shabbat 130

knives for a shabbat circumcision should be carried uncovered.

but wouldn't it be safer to always carry them covered, despite the political context

(this chapter discusses performing circumcision on shabbat. it begins with R. Eliezer saying that one should carry the knife uncovered on shabbat. but if it is dangerous to do so, because there is a decree banning circumcision, then one should carry the knife covered. for english translation of this page, see here)

shabbat 128

establishing the bond between mother and newborn.

and letting go.

(this page discusses that one is able to help an animal to give birth on the sabbath, and suggestions of how to encourage the mother to bond with the newborn if the mother is showing that she is distancing herself from it. earlier in the page when discussing about carrying various animals on shabbat, it compares them with a woman who helps her child walk, and permitted to carrying them on shabbat in public domain only once they are able to lift their feet up and walk independently. for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 100

can water define a domain?

discussing water in holes and the status of the sea

(due to it's fluidity, throwing something on water is not considered placement. water in a deep hole is not considered 'filled' and therefore still liable as if one threw something into an empty hole. but the sea has the status of a karmelit, neither public not private space. for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 99

throwing needles, earth and boards

is it from when it was thrown or where they land that determines the domain?

shabbat 96

not everything is written explicitly in the text

some details are hidden, they need to be anonymous

others, just aren't there...

(after an inconclusive discussion about where in the Torah the prohibition of carrying in public space on Shabbat is derived, there is the statement that it is from tradition and not written in the text. there is also a discussion about the man who gathers wood on shabbat and is punished. R. Akiva identifies him as Zelophehad, but R. Yehudah b. Beteira is cautious, the text does not say so explicitly and so may slander an innocent man. for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 94

human dignity
looking after the body can overturn even a torah prohibition
from carrying a corpse
to removing a severed hanging fingernail

(for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 93

if the support is not necessary

then

it's irrelevant.

it's like it isn't there

(for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

the multiple ways of carrying

with the usual, and unusual, parts of the body

and 2 people carrying one heavy item

(for english translation of this page of talmud, see here)

shabbat 91

combinations
individual things coming together to form one unit

can 2 different intentions be part of one prohibited act of carrying?

can many items combine to be one unit for carrying?

(for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 90

the significance of very small things

a trace of perfume,
a speck of pepper
a single hair

and the power of locusts

(one is only liable for carrying on shabbat if carrying an amount to be useful. there are some items where even a very small trace is significant. and a talisman can be made with a certain locust for learning and wisdom. for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 78

the amount that cannot be carried in the hand
depends on its usefulness.

how much is needed for that substance to be handy.

Wednesday, 19 December 2012

shabbat 76

the amount of food that can't be carried in the hand
is measured in units of how much that can be carried in the mouth that it feeds.

but whose mouth?

shabbat 65

concern about the colourful and precious items women may remove from their ear, their mouth, and share in the public space.

& the concern about the intimacy of women in the private space.

(debate if women wearing gold teeth or coloured strings in pierced ears in public is if these items are things that are beautiful, and they may be tempted to remove and show each other. later on the page is ruling about girls not sharing a bed, as "women who rub" might be considered 'zona' and not eligible to marry into the priesthood. there is another opinion that girls should not share a bed, is just so they shouldn't get used to sleeping with another person present.  for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 62

beauty, jewellery and perfume

becomes haughty
and makes a stench that cannot be masked by herbs.

(discussion on the types of ornaments and perfume that women can and can't wear in public as they are considered carrying, leads to a description of the decedent behaviour of the northern kingdom and the first temple period that led to exile and was punished by marking and disfiguring the body. for english translation of this talmud page, see here)

shabbat 61

it's the three times successful hand that makes the amulet something that can be carried on shabbat.

(only an effective amulet can be carried on shabbat. effective amulet = one made by an expert that has healed 3 times. debate if 3 different people, or 3 times for same person. for english translation for this full talmud page, see here)

shabbat 60

needles, pins, spikes & nails

and the bloodshed caused by wearing spiked sandals.

(after finishing off discussing women's ornaments - hairpins etc. new mishna opens the discussion about what men can and cannot wear in public on shabbat. story of spiked sandals, hiding in cave from the enemy and in the confusion of hearing/seeing spiked sandals, many people were killed....)
